New Delhi: Contrary to the general public perception about unfriendly and insensitive policemen, a 58-year-old Delhi cop has earned praise for displaying exemplary honesty by returning

abandoned bag full of cash and jewellery worth Rs.8 lakh to its owner.

According to a report published in the leading daily 'The Hindu', sub-inspector Mangej Singh spotted a bag lying on the roadside while he was on patrolling duty in the Ajmeri Gate area on Tuesday evening.

After noticing the abandoned bag, Mangej Singh decided to check it because of the high alert sounded in the city.

To his surprise, the bag contained cash and jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh. The bag, as per the report, belonged to a businessman who owns a garments shop in Central Delhi’s Kamla Market.

Since his daughter is getting married in a few weeks, he had purchased gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh on Tuesday.

He had kept around Rs.7.5 lakh in two separate pockets of his bag.

Sadly, the businessman was robbed off his bag while on his way to a restaurant in CP.

As he was driving, some members of the notorious thak-thak gang stole his bag by diverting his attention.

It is believed that the gang found Rs 3.5 lakh kept in the main pocket, and while fleeing to a secluded place, they threw the bag on the roadside near Ajmeri Gate.

They did not bother to check other pockets, which carried the rest of the cash and jewellery.

The bag was later found by sub-inspector Mangej Singh, who later contacted the owner and returned his belongings.

Parmaditya, DCP (Central) also reportedly confirmed the development and praised the vigilant sub-inspector.

Singh told the daily that the idea of keeping the bag did not even strike him once.

The sub-inspector will most likely be rewarded by the Delhi Police for his commendable work.
