New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the plea by Delhi Commission for Women opposing the release of juvenile accused in the December 16 gang-rape case.
Reacting to the development, the parents of Jyoti Singh, who is known as Nirbhaya, said they will continue the protests till justice is done.
"What can I say? There are no words to describe our disappointment," Badrinath Singh, the father of the victim Jyoti Singh, told AFP. "We don`t understand all these laws. We only know that the system has failed us."
Meanwhile, the mother of Nirbhaya burst out crying, saying she was not surprised by the apex court's decision.
Talking to media, Jyoti's mother asked: “All I have to say is that the plea, which was rejected by all three courts, will encourage more such crimes to be committed in society against women."
"There is no provision (to convict juveniles) or to punish them. They (courts) are more concerned about the accused. Women have been cheated and they continue to be cheated. Nobody wants to do anything on women's safety," Asha Devi said after the verdict.
"I will continue to fight to bring changes in the law," she said.
"Let's see what happens in the future. As of now only one convict has been released. There are four more convicts. I appeal to the Supreme Court that although the juvenile has been released since there is no provision to convict him further, please convict them (other four) and hang them and give justice to Nirbhaya," she added.
She, with tears in her eyes, asked: "If people have not learnt any lesson from Nirbhaya case, then what can one expect?"
The juvenile convict of the horrific December 16 gang-rape case was released yesterday.
The convict, who is now 20 years old, was known to be the most brutal of the six attackers.
His freedom came as parents of the gang-rape victim protested along with activists demanding death penalty for him.
The convict, along with five others, had gang-raped and murdered the 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus on December 16, 2012, an incident that shook the nation and led to widespread protests.
