Nirbhaya gang-rape case: DCW to file Special Leave Petition in SC against juvenile rapist’s release

New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women will file a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court on Saturday night against the scheduled release of the December 16 gang-rape juvenile convict, who has already been shifted out of Delhi.

“DCW filing Special Leave Petition in SC tonight. Will go to Judge’s house, will try get hearing tonight against Nirbhaya convict’s release,” Swati Maliwal, the body’s chief, tweeted.

The convict is scheduled to be released tomorrow.

The development comes on a day the parents of the December 16 gang-rape victim along with 40 DU and JNU students were detained and later released by the police as they staged a protest against the release of the juvenile convict in the case.

The father of the victim said that they had gathered for a peaceful demonstration against the release of the juvenile convict but the police detained them.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also termed the detention as "unacceptable" and said he has asked Chief Secretary KK Sharma to talk to Police Commissioner BS Bassi to secure the release of the victim's parents.

"I am shocked to learn that Nirbhaya's parents have been detained. They should immediately be released. Police action against Nirbhaya's parents is unacceptable. I have asked Chief Secy to talk to Police Commissioner and get them released," he tweeted.

However, the father of the victim accused the Delhi government of trying to shield the convict, who has now turned 20.

The convict, who is now 20 years old, has been taken to an undisclosed location from a correction home in North Delhi amid concerns that there was threat to his life.
