Western Ghats are facing dark days – Know why

New Delhi: Western Ghats are the chain of mountains that are older than Himalayas and run along the western part of Indian peninsula covering some 1,600 km from the mouth of Tapti river to the southern tip of India.

It is a World Heritage Site that hosts country's largest population of Asian Elephants and Bengal Tigers. Apart from them, these lands are also home to many rare and endemic species that are found nowhere else on the planet.

But sadly the internationally recognized Western Ghats are now facing serious threats from harmful human activities like aggressive logging and mining.

According of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) survey, Western Ghats need intense protection. The report underlined that harmful industrialization, animal-poaching, climate-change and weak environmental policies of our country are posing a threat to the ecosystem of this area.

It's high time that our government should realize the need to modify the environment policies and must find an effective way that draws a parallel between development and environmental protection.
