London: Britain's PM designate Theresa May may have professed her commitment to pulling her country out of the European Union but in reality Brexit is going to be a long-drawn process.
Foreign secretary Philip Hammond says Brexit will take as long as six years to complete – after Britain begins the formal process to leave the EU by triggering Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon that gives any EU member the right to quit unilaterally, and outlines the procedure for doing so.
However, Mrs May has said that she would not invoke Article 50, until next year.
Meanwhile, millions have signed an online petition seeking a second referendum.
But the Europeans are unimpressed and have putt pressure on Britain to swiftly carry out the divorce proceedings.
