New Delhi: Unplanned urbanisation and encroachments were among the reasons for the severe water logging in Gurgaon, Union minister Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said even as he stressed the need for a crackdown against encroachers of drains, canals and lakes.
"Unplanned urbanisation, lack of timely action against encroachments, politicking at lower lvls has led 2 dis situation. Let all of us share d blame & act.
"Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurgaon open up your eyes. Cities and Towns must awake. Let's crackdown against encroachers of drains, canals, lakes (sic)," he said in a series of tweets.
He called for fixing accountability for encroachments and their removal from every city on a war footing, and advocated relocating and rehabilitating the poor people.
"Relocate and rehabilitate poor people. Accountability to be fixed for encroachments and to be removed on a war footing in every city.
"People, Planners, Administrators, Political Leaders to be alive to the reality to fulfil their responsibility (sic)," he said.
He also asked people not to "join the blame game" and "fulfill their responsibility".
Long tailbacks were witnessed in gridlocked roads in Gurgaon during the last two days due to severe waterlogging on National Highway-8 after heavy rains lashed Delhi's satellite city, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and forcing authorities to clamp prohibitory orders near Hero Honda chowk.
Schools were also ordered to declare a two-day holiday in the wake of the situation.
