28th World AIDS Day: 5 lesser known facts about the disease

World AIDS Day is currently in its 28th edition. It was observed for the first time in 1988. The theme for this year is “Getting to zero; end AIDS by 2030”.

New Delhi: Despite all efforts, AIDS continues to be a word that generates a lot of anxiety among people. The social stigma attached to the disease is a grave challenge being faced by the society. December 1st marks World AIDS Day, an opportunity to unite against the disease, create awareness and overcome it.

World AIDS Day is currently in its 28th edition. It was observed for the first time in 1988. The theme for this year is “Getting to zero; end AIDS by 2030”.

Here are five lesser known facts about the disease:

-It is a myth that one can catch HIV infection by staying around with people who are HIV positive.

-According to data provided by World Health Organisation (WHO), there were approximately 37 million people living with HIV at the end of 2014.

-There is no cure for HIV infection. However, effective antiretroviral (ARV) drugs can control the virus and help prevent transmission so that people with HIV, and those at substantial risk, can enjoy healthy and productive lives, as per WHO.

-It is a myth that sex is the only cause that can lead to HIV and AIDS.

-As per data provided by WHO, the symptoms of HIV are different according to the stage of infection. It has been noted that, in the first few weeks after initial infection, individuals may experience no symptoms or an influenza-like illness including fever, headache, rash or sore throat.
