New Delhi: Malaria has been a major health problem in many countries, including India, for centuries.

The mosquito-borne disease kills 438 000 people in 2015, as per the WHO. In India, more than 50,000 died every year due to malaria.

Malaria is caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Although life-threatening, it is preventable and curable.

Malaria occurs when a female Anopheles mosquito carrying malaria-causing parasites feeds on a human and injects the parasites in the form of sporozoites into the bloodstream. The sporozoites then travel to the liver and invade liver cells.
