New Delhi: Diabetes has become a common disease these days just like any other diseases such as- flu, cough and cold. According to a study conducted by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the number of Indians suffering from this disease is expected to cross 100 million mark by 2030.
According to WHO, diabetes has become one of the major causes of premature illness and death in most countries, mainly through the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Life is certainly not easy for a diabetic as one has to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout life since there is no cure for the disease.

Here are some myths and facts associated with the disease:
Myth: Consuming too much sugar cause diabetes
Fact: A common myth which is generally associated with this lifestyle disease is that consuming too much sugar causes diabetes. But, is it true? Well, the answer is ‘No’. Limited sugar intake is just okay followed by daily physical activity and healthy lifestyle.

Myth: Taking insulin regularly makes you dependent on it
Fact: According to doctors, it is not true as taking insulin just helps you wave-off the complications that come with diabetes and live a better life.
Myth: Obesity is the major reason behind diabetes
Fact: It is not true, obesity is not the only reason but, lack of physical activity which leads to excessive weight gain.
Myth: Diabetic patient cannot eat sweets
Fact: A diabetic patient can eat sweets but in a limited amount followed by physical activity and healthy diet.
Myth: If you don't have a family history of diabetes then you are saved from the disease
Fact: It is just not true as even if you don't have a family history of diabetes, lack of physical activity, disturbed lifestyle and bad eating habits can make you prone to it.
World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14 each year in order to create awareness about the disease amongst the public.
