New Delhi: Sudden appearance of dark black or brown spots on the body can be scary. Sometimes this happens just due to hyperpigmentation or random concentration of melanin deposits at one point, which is not that harmful. Normally, hyperpigmentation patches are symmetrical in shape and size.

But if you spot a patch with irregular shape, size and color, then it is worth consulting a doctor about, as it can be a sign of skin cancer known as Melanoma.

Melanoma is the most common yet serious form of skin cancer characterized by uncontrolled growth of pigment producing tanning cells called melanocytes. The prolonged injury to melanocytes cells results in cancerous cell. Melanoma patches vary in size because of uncontrolled growth and division of cancer cells.

This disease mailnly affects people aged between 45-55 years.

Thankfully this form of skin cancer is curable but early detection is a solution.

Here are some simple ways in which you can prevent the risk of Melanoma:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure: Direct exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun is the main culprit of Melanoma as it plays a major role in developing skin cancer.
  • Boost immune system: A weak immune system puts you at higher risk of developing Melanoma. So, during summer try to protect yourself from all kind of infections and viral diseases.
  • Shield yourself: Always carry an umbrella while you step out in the sun. Wear light-colored full sleeves clothes to avoid exposure.
  • Keep an eye on abnormal mole: Immediately consult an experienced dermatologists whenever you spot any new or abnormal mole on your body. Certain types of moles are more likely to develop into Melanoma.
  • Increase intake of Vitamin C: Although it is a secondary level of defense but a vitamin C rich diet can build a good level of protection and prepares you body to fight dangerous UV rays.
