Tibetan PM expresses gratitude to US for $6 mn aid

Tibetan PM-in-exile Lobsang Sangay on Monday thanked the US Congress for allocating in its budget $6 million in aid for Tibetans in India.

Dharamsala: Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay on Monday thanked the US Congress for allocating in its budget $6 million in aid for Tibetans in India and Nepal for the 2016 fiscal.

"The Central Tibetan Administration would like to express its deep gratitude and thank the US government and the Congress for their generous assistance towards the Tibetan community," Sangay said in a statement.

The Congressional budget appropriation bill states that "Economic Support Fund not less than $6,000,000 shall be made available for programs to promote and preserve Tibetan culture, development, and the resilience of Tibetan communities in India and Nepal".

Notably, the $6 million fund sanctioned this year by the US Congress is a 100 percent increase from the one sanctioned last year.

The US Congress had sanctioned $3 million under a new line item to aid the Tibetan community in India and Nepal last year in its budget.

The Tibetan administration in exile is based here in Himachal Pradesh.
