Action not against JNU, but to nab those associated with terrorism: BJP

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday said that the action against protesting students in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was aimed at those trying to align themselves with those associated with terrorism.

"The JNU issue is not about an institution or an attack on an institution, or about those studying there. It is clearly an investigation into those elements, who desire India`s destruction and who are openly trying to align themselves with those associated with terrorism," BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli told ANI here.

"In Afzal Guru`s case, the honourable Supreme Court upheld that hanging. So, when you protest against it, are you saying that the Supreme Court was wrong? Then they invoke their right of freedom of expression under the Constitution. Is that right without reasonable restrictions, as the Constitution defines?," he added.

Kohli also urged the students and teachers of JNU to join the investigation and hand over those raising anti-India slogans to the police.

"The best course of action would be that these students or the teachers should identify those exact elements, who were part of that protest and hand them over to the police. They should join the investigation so that no innocent is stuck," he said.

Meanwhile, JNU Students` Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising anti-India slogans, will be produced before a Delhi court today as his three-day police remand ends.

Kumar was arrested on Friday allegedly for raising anti-India slogans at an event organised by students on the JNU campus to commemorate the death of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was executed in 2013.

He was sent to three-day police custody after the Delhi Police told the court that they wanted to probe his alleged links to `terrorist groups`.
