Guwahati: Newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators in Assam will meet here on Sunday to elect Sarbananda Sonowal as the leader of the legislature party, formalising the choice as the new Chief Minister of the state.
Sonowal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi last evening and held a discussion with him on the government formation in the state.
Sonowal, who will take oath as the new Chief Minister of Assam on Tuesday, also held meeting with party president Amit Shah last evening to discuss government formation in the state.
He thanked Shah for the central leadership's help during the elections.
The 53-year-old Union sports minister, who was BJP's chief ministerial candidate, led the campaign in the Assembly polls in which the BJP-led alliance bagged 86 seats in the 126-member House.
Sonowal will take oath on May 24 which will be attended by Prime Minister Modi, the party chief, among others.
