New Delhi: With Congress performing poorly in the 2016 Assembly Elections, AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh, Thursday, said advocated for changes in the organisational structure in the grand old party.

Singh, who has often pitched for party vice president Rahul Gandhi to take over as Congress president, tweeted: “Today's results disappointing but not unexpected. We have done enough Introspection shouldn't we go for a Major Surgery?”

Singh's reaction came after Congress suffered a massive drubbing in the Assembly Elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Tamil Nadu. Not only it displayed  dismal performance, the grand old party lost power in two states.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday made history in Assam by getting its first government in the northeast, decimating Congress which was dethroned in Kerala too even as two women Chief Ministers Jayalalithaa and Mamata Banerjee romped home for a second consecutive term in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

In West Bengal, Congress bagged 44 seats in 294-member Assembly, in Kerala 22, Assam Congress+ 26 and Tamil Nadu 8.

Meanwhile, there has been uproar within a section of the Congress supporters to bring in Priyanka Gandhi to revive the grand old party.

The party faces an uphill task in 2017 when Uttar Pradesh and Punjab will go to polls.

The desperation to perform in the nest Assembly Elections is quite visible with Rahul Gandhi roping in master poll strategist Prashnat Kishor to manage the election campaign..
