New Delhi: Congress leader Digvijay Singh today came under fire from both BJP and MIM over a photo shared by him on Twitter that showed Mohan Bhagwat and Asaduddin Owaisi as two sides of the same face.
"The Two Perpetrators of Religious Fanaticism who are destroying Social Fabric of this Country. Image sent by a friend," Singh had posted on the social networking site yesterday along with a photo showing Owaisi's half face with the other half of RSS chief Bhagwat.
The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief reacted sharply to the tweet and called it an "insult of Muslims", while Union Minister and BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said the Congress talking of secularism was like "devil quoting scriptures".
"I fail to understand why Muslims are being insulted. My photo is being shown with Mohan Bhagwat. My photo is not important. A Muslim is being shown as the other side of Bhagwat's face. Is it not communalism? I want to tell that Congress leader that I am not important. I will go to the grave but do not insult the Muslims," Owaisi said.
On the other hand, Naidu slammed Singh for putting Bhagwat's picture along with that of Owaisi's, saying the Congress leader should not be taken seriously as the people of the country have already rejected him and his party.
"The friends of Congress included Muslim League. They tied up with Owaisi. They (Congress) have no moral right to criticise BJP or speak about secularism. It's like the devil quoting the scriptures. From Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to Owaisi, all these are creations of Congress," Naidu alleged.
He also accused Congress of promoting casteism, communalism and regionalism.
In another tweet, Singh today condemned "laathicharge on saints" in Varanasi during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit and asked the RSS and VHP to seek apology.
"I strongly condemn the merciless lathicharge on sadhu saints of Varanasi during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit there. Sangh and VHP should seek public apology from saints," he said on Twitter.
