Constable held for extorting money from truck driver in Delhi

A constable has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a truck driver in north Delhi's Timarpur area on Tuesday.

New Delhi: A constable posted with the third battalion of armed police here has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a truck driver in north Delhi's Timarpur area on Tuesday.

The constable, identified as Rajesh (26), was booked under relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act. A country-made pistol was also recovered from his possession, police said.

The incident came to light at around 3.30 AM when a local police patrol team saw three men locked in a scuffle by the side of a parked truck in the Timarpur area. When the police team approached them, one of the three persons, later identified as Yogesh, fled.

Police said that Rajesh and Yogesh had stopped the truck and were demanding money from the driver, saying they would frame false charges of hit-and-run against him unless he paid up.

But as the truck driver refused to pay any money, the duo allegedly hit him with the butt of the gun and snatched Rs 1,800 from him, leading to the scuffle, said police.

When Rajesh was later taken to police station and interrogated, it emerged that he was a 2010-batch constable posted with the third battalion of armed police, they added.
