New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has forwarded to the Ethics Committee of Parliament a complaint by a BJP MP alleging that Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi presented himself as a British citizen to float a firm there.

"One MP had sent a complaint to me regarding this. Whenever an MP sends a complaint to the Speaker, it is referred to the committee as per rules. That particular complaint has been referred to the Ethics Committee," Mahajan told PTI over phone when asked about the issue.

The Ethics Committee is chaired by BJP veteran LK Advani.

BJP MP Maheish Girri had some time back written to the Speaker requesting for "appropriate inquiry" into party colleague Subramanian Swamy's allegations that Rahul had declared himself a British citizen to float a firm in that country.

Swamy, who had also approached the Speaker in this regard, today claimed on Twitter that a Lok Sabha official had confimed to him that his complaint against Gandhi's British nationality issue has been referred to the Ethics Committee for a probe.

Girri, who is an MP from East Delhi, had earlier maintained that it was necessary that people should get to know the reality in this issue as he requested the Speaker to initiate an appropriate inquiry.
