Gurdaspur attack: US exposes Pakistan’s lie, gives evidence to Nawaz Sharif

Washington: It seems Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was made to listen more than talk when he met US President Barack Obama last week.

According to The Indian Express, the US gave evidence to Sharif that the terror strike in Gurdaspur in July was carried out by groups emanating from Pakistan.

The evidence is based on Global Positioning System (GPS) sets recovered from the terrorists.

The daily further quoted diplomats as saying that the US warned Sharif that large-scale civilian casualties in the attack could have pushed India to order cross-border strikes on terror camps, which could have potentially led to a full-scale war.

‘Pakistani diplomats initially insisted that the Gurdaspur strike had nothing to do with their country. But when the US insisted that the technical data was irrefutable, they argued that there was no official complicity in facilitating it,’ said a Washington-based diplomat.

According to the daily, the United States will seek more assurance on Pakistan’s plans to act against terror groups, such as Lashkar-e-Toiba, during Pakistani Army Chief Raheel Sharif’s upcoming visit to Washington. 

Notably, India had already said that the three terrorists killed in Dinanagar town in Punjab had infiltrated from Pakistan and warned the neighbouring country that any effort by enemies will meet an effective and forceful response from Indian security forces.

A senior police officer was among six people killed in Punjab on July 27 when terrorists opened random fire before storming a police station complex, sparking a fierce gun battle that shattered two decades of calm in the state. 

This was the first major terror attack in Punjab after the assassination of then chief minister Beant Singh on August 31, 1995 in Chandigarh, joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.
