Delhi: India is planning to acquire new-generation Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems, as per a media report.
The Russian air defence missile systems can supposedly destroy incoming hostile aircraft, stealth fighters, missiles and drones.
Its range is up to 400 km.
The Times of India quoted sources as saying that the defence acquisitions council (DAC), which is chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, will soon take up the proposal.
The proposal for the acquisition has been moved by the IAF.
The plan is to purchase around a dozen S-400 long-range systems.
The Daily also quoted sources as saying that the project was at an initial stage at present and that if finalised, the S-400 systems will be inducted over several years.
Parrikar is due to visit Russia.
Also Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Putin will be holding a summit in Moscow in December.
The S-400 reportedly has three kinds of missiles with different capabilities.
It is said to fly at supersonic and hypersonic speeds to intercept all kinds of targets at ranges from 120 to 400 km.
