JNU crackdown: Delhi Police submits report to MHA, says Umar Khalid led Afzal Guru event

Delhi Police on Tuesday submitted a report on its alleged crackdown on a group of protesting Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students on February 9 to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday submitted a report on its alleged crackdown on a group of protesting Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students on February 9 to the Ministry of Home Affairs and blamed students leader Kanhaiya Kumar and a 'wanted' student Umar Khalid for events leading to violence in the varsity campus.

In a four-page report, the Delhi Police claimed that Democratic Students Union (DSU) activists led by Umar Khalid raised anti-national slogans after they were denied to broadcast a pro-Afzal Guru documentary on February 9 in the JNU.

Umar Khalid, who was one of the main organisers of the Afzal Guru event, has been absconding after the incident.

The Delhi Police report said nothing about JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested and booked for sedition.

It said nothing about Kumar's role in organising the Afzal Guru event.

Delhi Police Chief BS Bassi had earlier claimed that he has enough photo and video evidence to prove sedition charges slapped against JNU students and that no innocent was being made to suffer.

Bassi also made it clear that neither the Special Cell nor the National Investigating Agency (NIA) have been asked to probe the links between the JNU students and terrorist Afzal Guru.

Asked about allegations made by JNU teachers that it was wrong to register a case of sedition as the act was only that of ‘dissent’, Bassi said, “Sedition is bringing in hatred and contempt or exciting disaffection towards the State by words or by signs or visible representation. The case was registered on the basis of prima facie evidence.”

“Anyone who is indulging in slogan shouting which tends to impact the integrity of our nation and can excite others to lead to the breakdown of public order are required to be brought before the court for dispensation of justice in the matter,” Bassi said.

The police chief said that the matter of students’ links with terrorist organisations was under investigation. “The facts will be out once it is completed,” he said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Saturday ordered a magisterial probe into the alleged shouting of anti-India slogans by a group of students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University leading to the arrest of students' union leader Kanhaiya Kumar.
