New Delhi: Arib Fayyaz Majeed, who hails from Panvel in Maharashtra and a civil engineer by training, was the first Indian to graduate as suicide bomber from an ISIS training school, a media report said on Thursday.

Arib tried to blow himself up three times but failed each time. But now back home and in the custody of Indian interrogators, the 23-year-old gave a detailed account of his bombing attempts.


"I tried my best to die as a martyr but was unable to achieve martyrdom," NDTV quoted Arib as saying to interrogators.


He said that while he was in Syria he used his civil engineering skills to build underground bunkers in the ISIS stronghold Raqqah, which is now the target of aerial bombing by the US-led coalition.


According to NDTV, Arib left Mumbai along with four friends on May 24, 2014. He returned to India last November and has since been in custody.
