New Delhi: The Political Affairs Committee of Aam Aadmi Pary today cleared eight names for MCD bypolls which are expected to be held next month, ahead of its rivals BJP and Congress.
Contesting in 13 wards will be AAP's maiden outing in the municipal corporation polls after the party's stupendous feat in the Assembly election last year when it won 67 out of 70 seats.
Names of candidates to the rest five seats will be declared in the next two days, a party leader said.
The move comes a day after Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan - led Swaraj Abhiyan announced its intention to enter the fray.
Candidates for ward 214 (Khichripur), ward 238 (Jhilmil), ward 67 (Wazirpur), ward 44 (Qamruddin Nagar), ward 136 (Matiala), ward 168 (Nanakpura), ward 176 (Bhati Mines) and ward 124 (Vikas Nagar) have been announced.
They are Yogesh Dedha, Ghanshyam Gaur, Sachin Singhal, Arun Singh Chauhan, Ramesh Matiala, Anil Mallik, Pawan Tanwar and Ashok Saini respectively.
Most of these wards are in South Delhi Municipal Corporation where several councillors have been elected as MLAs.
When asked, Congress said it has asked its local units to send a list of names while BJP said it will declare its list the day poll dates are announced.
The civic bodies are currently controlled by BJP. Fresh full-fledged polls to MCD are expected to take place next year. In January, the Delhi High Court has ordered bypolls to be held at the earliest.
