Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar informed Lok Sabha that the NGT has been established for the effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources, including enforcement of any legal right relating to environment and giving relief and compensation for damage to persons and property.

In a written reply, Javadekar said "no" to a query whether the government proposes to make changes in the powers and authority of the tribunal.
