Kolkata: RSS will launch a state-wide awareness campaign against the decision by the Mamata Banerjee government to change the name of West Bengal and also urged the Centre not to agree to it.
"TMC is trying to wipe out history so that our future generations do not know why the state is called West Bengal. It is trying to wipe off history which states that India was divided in 1947 on religious lines. We will raise awareness on this issue among the people of the state," a top RSS leader from Bengal told PTI.
"We will also urge BJP government at the centre not to pay heed to state's demand," he said.
The state cabinet had recently decided to rename the state as Bengal after its 2011 proposal for the name 'Paschim Bango' failed to get the green signal from the Centre.
The proposal had been made soon after Trinamool Congress came to power in West Bengal for the first time that year.
The state BJP unit had criticised the TMC government for its decision to change the name of the state and decided to launch a state-wide 'Save West Bengal' campaign against the decision.
