SC rejects petition seeking action against MPs for wasting time during Parliament session

New Delhi: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a petition seeking its intervention and action against the lawmakers for wasting precious time during Parliament sessions.

According to reports, the apex court gave strong observations while dismissing the petition and said that parliamentarians are elected representatives, experienced and wise persons so there is no need to suggest anything to them.

The apex court is not here to give advice to parliamentarians and it should not give advices to legislatures on how they should function, it said.

Notably, the petition was filed by an NGO 'Foundation for Restoration of National Values'.

In its petition, the NGO had maintained that every minute of running Parliament during the last six sessions had cost an average Rs 2.5 lakh, and called for guidelines to ensure that Parliament functions without disruptions from its members.

It said that 2,162 hours was wasted in the last six sessions to disruptions. NGO had filed the petition through advocate Ravi P Mehrotra.

The central government, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the secretariats of the two Houses were made parties to it.
