Sexual harassment row: Will AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan resign from Delhi Assembly as well?

New Delhi: AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan is facing flak after reports emerged that the AAP MLA from Okhla tendered his resignation following the molestation charges being filed by his sister-in-law against him and his brother-in law.

The Congress Party said on Sunday that if Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan has resigned from all the posts on "moral grounds" then he should also resign from the Delhi Assembly as well. The demand came a day after Khan wrote a letter to party national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and resigned from all posts.

"This time the allegations are being levelled by his own sister-in-law. The charges have not been made by the Congress, BJP or any other political party.

If he has resigned on moral grounds, I think he should also resign from the Assembly," Congress leader and former Waqf Board chairman Haroon Yusuf said.

"It is very astonishing that the party which claimed it to be a messiah for women in Delhi, its own ministers are now being involved in sex scandals. The Waqf Board chairman is now involved in a women exploitation case. I believe that there are many more leaders like him in AAP. I don`t know what criteria did Arvind Kejriwal had set where he said that there was a three-level check," he added.

Khan's lettter to Kejriwal

The AAP legislator on Saturday wrote to Kejriwal and resigned from all government posts, saying that he was "tired" of giving "clarifications" on various allegations levelled against him.

In his letter to Kejriwal, Khan said, "I exposed several corruptions of the previous government after I became the chairman of Delhi Waqf Board. I have been working wholeheartedly to serve people of Delhi. But some people are not liking my honesty and dedication. False allegations are being leveled against me and my family and I have been tired of giving justifications regarding those."

"Therefore, I would like to get relieved of all responsibilities party has given me. I resign from all posts," he added.Khan is involved in an alleged recruitment scam in the Waqf Board where the Anti-Corruption Branch has launched a `preliminary inquiry` against him.

Khan has termed the move as "interference" in working of the body by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.

Khan was arrested on charges of threatening a woman on July 24 and was released on bail on July 28.
