New Delhi: Sonam Gupta - the fictitious character – that ruled the social media in 2016, especially in August and November, has been ranked at No 3 in the Google India list of top 10 trending personalities.

Sonam Gupta's name first appeared on a torn Rs 10 currency note in August this year with the tagline "Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai (Sonam Gupta is unfaithful)".


Later, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in November, 'Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai', scribed on a Rs 2,000 new currency note, became a top trend in the month again.


While US President-elect Donald Trump was the most searched personality, Olympic medallist PV Sindhu was placed at the second spot by the search engine giant.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar - fourth position


Bollywood actress Disha Patani who made debut in a biopic on Indian cricketing star MS Dhoni stood at fifth place.


Olympic champion Sakshi Malik also featured among the Top 10 trending personalities on Google.


Rio Olympic Games 2016 emerged as the top trending search query among Google users, followed by the augmented-reality (AR) game Pokemon Go.
