Udupi: Eight schoolchildren died and nine others were injured on Tuesday morning when their school van collided with a bus in Karnataka's Udupi district.
The incident took place at the Trasi village in Kundapur, around 400 km from Bengaluru, at around 8:15 am.
According to early reports, 17 children (from primary to Class VI) were en route to the Don Bosco School in Kundapur in a Maruti Omni van when a private bus rammed into it from behind, completely crushing a part of the vehicle. Driver Martin and teacher Philomena were also in the van.
Eight children were killed on the spot, police said.
The injured, including the driver, are being treated at a hospital in Kasturba Medical College Hosital, Manipal.
The driver of the bus is under arrest.
