Kerala Police to act against illegal killing of stray dogs

Kerala police chief TP Senkumar on Friday said he asked his district police chiefs to see action is taken against illegal killing of stray dogs.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala police chief TP Senkumar on Friday said he asked his district police chiefs to see action is taken against illegal killing of stray dogs.

Speaking to IANS, Senkumar said on Thursday an official attached to the office of union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi had met him with an order stating that the law does not permit illegal killing of stray dogs.

"I passed on the order to all the 14 district police chiefs to see that the law of the land is observed," he said.

The issue of stray dogs in the state has become a major problem as last year according to reports around a lakh people in the state were bitten by them.

The Kerala government, after holding three rounds of talks with local bodies, launched norms like animal birth control measures and sterilisation of dogs by holding special camps and free treatment to all who suffer dog bites.
