The Malappuaram district in Kerala is bounded by the Nilgiris hills on the East and the Arabian Sea on the west. District of Malappuram is literally the land atop the hills, is remarkable for its unique natural beauty. Home to the khilafath movement and the mappila revolts, which questioned the British authority in India, Malappuram was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times.
The district consist of six talukas known as Tirur, Ernad, Tirurangadi, Perinthalmanna, Nilambur and Ponnani.
Malappuaram went to panchayat polls in the second phase on November 5. The district registered voter turnout of 74%. Out of 1.4 crore eleigible voters, 86 lakh were females and 53.8 lakh were males in the second phase of Kerala local body elections.
