Mumbai: Eighty percent of people of the Maratha community are socially and economically backward, the Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court, defending its decision to grant reservation to Marathas.

The state government wants to grant reservation to the community in government jobs and educational institutions across the state.

In a 2500-page affidavit to the Court, the government defended its decision in response to a series of petitions against the move, IANS reported.

The final hearing of the petitions will be on December 7.
