Tibetans in India call anti-China slogan on currency `mischief`
Tibetan government-in-exile Friday termed as `a work of mischievous elements` the circulation here of Indian currency notes bearing an anti-China slogan.
Dharamsala: The Tibetan government-in-exile Friday termed as "a work of mischievous elements" the circulation here of Indian currency notes bearing an anti-China slogan.
"It has been brought to our notice that Rs.500 notes bearing `Free Tibet, Free China` slogan are reportedly in circulation in Dharamsala. It could be the work of certain mischievous elements," the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) said in a statement.
Police said a number of Rs.500 notes bearing the slogan were in circulation for the past three days. "It`s a serious offence. We are looking into it," Superintendent of Police Balbir Thakur told IANS.
The CTA said the "incident is unfortunate as it comes at a time when Tibetans from India, Nepal and Bhutan are in New Delhi to express their solidarity with Tibetans in Tibet".
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese Communist rule in 1959.
Around 140,000 Tibetans now live in exile with over 100,000 of them in India. Over six million Tibetans live in Tibet.
