SC vacates stay on formation of new government in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi: The Supreme Court, Thursday, paved the way for the formation of new government in Arunachal Pradesh by vacating its status quo order of yesterday on maintaining President's Rule in the state.

Supreme Court's go ahead came after it examined judicial and assembly records on disqualification of 14 rebel Congress MLAs by former Speaker Nabam Rebia.

The apex court had earlier questioned Governor JP Rajkhowa's use of his "constitutional discretion" to advance the sixth session of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly by over a month, asking whether it was backed by sound constitutional principles or based on a mere whim.

The Union Cabinet, On Feb 17, recommended revocation of President's Rule in Arunachal Pradesh.

On Feb 15, 31 MLAs, led by Congress dissident Kalikho Pul, called on the Governor to stake claim for forming the next government in the politically fragile state.

He was accompanied by 19 rebel Congress MLAs along with 11 BJP legislators and two independent members.
