1975 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi to be part of Rajasthan school syllabus

Rajasthan's ruling BJP government is preparing to bring into school syllabus a chapter on the 'Emergency' of 1975.

Jaipur: Rajasthan's ruling BJP government is preparing to bring into school syllabus a chapter on the 'Emergency' of 1975 imposed during former PM Indira Gandhi's tenure and it will be part of the social science textbooks of Classes X and XII, as per a media report.

According to NDTV, the announcement was made on Sunday by state's education minister Vasu Dev Devnani at a government school function in Ajmer

The minister was quoted as saying, "In 1975, the Emergency was imposed. People were put into jail, there was political upheaval and a political change. So our youth must know how to protect democracy."

Irked by the decision, senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot said, "They tried to delete portions that talk about Pandit Nehru."

He was further quoted as saying by the media house, "Indira Gandhi was one of the strongest leaders we had. If we talk about her, we must talk about also the war she fought against Pakistan".

Earlier this year, the state education department had removed the name of Jawaharlal Nehru from the social science text books of Class 8.

Indira's birth centenary is to be celebrated next year by the Congress.
