Women not above men, can't become qazis: Rajasthan's chief qazi

Jahan Ara and Afroz Begum had proclaimed that they have become qazis after completing a course from Mumbai.

Jaipur: Two woman from Rajasthan made news recently when they proclaimed that they have become qazis but it appears that some Muslim community leaders are not impressed.

Speaking to The Hindu , Khalid Usmani, Rajasthan’s chief qazi, said: “Women cannot become qazis. The Koran states that women cannot be above men.”

The newspaper also quotes Abdul Sattar, Jaipur’s Mufti, as saying that Islam did not allow a woman to hold the position of a Qazi.

Jahan Ara and Afroz Begum had held a press conference last week to proclaim that they had completed a two-year course from Darul Uloom-i-Niswan in Mumbai to become qazis.

However, many Muslim scholars argued that Islam gives equal rights to men and women and anyone can hold a position on the basis academic qualification.
