Get ready to hear the 'sound of silence'!

Have you ever been inside the world's quietest room? No? Shouldn't be a problem, because now, you can make your own room absolutely sound proof!

It's human nature to want some peace and quiet in life but have you also ever wondered what total silence may feel like? It sounds crazy, but you may be able to hear even your heartbeat loud and clear.

Even if it's not total silence, scientists at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology seem to have almost nailed it. They have created a system that absorbs 99.7% of all the sound that hits it.

This new technique uses a pair of resonators, built as a single layer and designed to naturally vibrate at the frequency of whatever they’re attached to. Sound is substantially canceled out by one of the resonators.

However, sound naturally scatters when it hits the first material, only this time, it will disperse at the natural frequency of the resonator. The second resonator is tuned to just the right frequency, enough to create a destructive pattern. So, the scattered waves are canceled and almost everything is absorbed up to 99.7%. That’s approximately 50 dB noise diminution, which is a huge amount.
