New battery can self-destruct in water in just 30 minutes!
Batteries take very long time to decompose and also leak toxic metals into the environment that can cause deadly diseases.
New Delhi: Batteries are instant source of power and are used in wide array of gadgets, appliances and modern technologies. Sadly, these wonderful little energy sources have become a major cause of land pollution because they are not disposed of in a right way.
Batteries take very long time to decompose and also leak toxic metals into the environment that can cause deadly diseases. Well, to solve this major environmental problem, scientists at Iowa State University have created a degradable battery for the transient devices.
The lithium-ion battery can 2.5 volts of electric potential and dissolves itself in 30 minutes when comes in contact with water. It measures 1 x 5 x 6mm and consist of eight layers including an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte separator.
The biodegradable technology, that can melt with water or when comes in contact with heat or light, are the future of healthcare applications and environmental sensors. Inventors believe that its self-destructive property will be used by Army forces to keep secrets safe from the enemies.
