Peshawar: The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in a statement on Saturday claimed the responsibility for "successfully" targeting Sikh politician Sardar Sooran Singh.
TTP is an umbrella organisation of various Sunni Islamist militant groups based in Pakistan`s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) along the Afghan border in Pakistan.
On Friday, Singh was murdered near Pir Baba in Buner district while going home after attending a political rally of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
PTI chief Imran Khan had made Swaran Singh a member of the Punjab provincial assembly in Pakistan.
District police chief Khalid Hamadani told media that motorcycle-borne unidentified gunmen fired at Singh, who died on the spot.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today strongly condemned killing of Soran Singh. "This heinous act of Tehreek-e-Taliban is highly deplorable. The Pakistan Government should take strict action against them and the culprits must get booked," SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar told news agency ANI.
Sikhs make up less than 1 percent of Pakistan's 190 million people. Many see Pakistan as the place where their religion began.
