New Delhi: The Indian space agency ISRO successfully placed the country's new Cartosat-2 series into the orbit, along with 19 others in a single mission on Wednesday, breaking its own record. Here's a look at some key facts about the advanced remote sensing satellite.

 

  • The Cartosat-2 series satellite is the primary satellite carried by PSLV-C34.
  • Built, launched and maintained by the ISRO, the satellite weighs around 725.5 kg.

 

  • PSLV-C34 launched Cartosat-2 series satellite at 09:26 hrs (IST), on June 22, 2016, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Cartosat-2 carries a state-of-the-art panchromatic (PAN) camera that can take black and white pictures of the earth in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Some key features of the satellite - orbit type is Circular Polar Sun Synchronous, orbit height is 505 km, orbit inclination is 97.48 degrees

 

  • The images sent by Cartosat satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and other applications.
