New Delhi: In the years to come, citizen scientists could play a major role in the next discovery of gravitational waves.
Recently, gravitational researchers of the Einstein@home project announced that they are in need of citizen scientists who volunteer their idle computers to help unravel one of the greatest scientific mysteries of the universe.
This landmark announcement came after the successful detection of the gravitational waves for the first time by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) collaboration. The astrophysicist proclaim that the historic observation will revolutionize their understanding of the universe.
The first sign of waves were detected on Sep 14, 2015. Researchers are eager to see them again and that is why they have decided to recruit citizen scientists for help.
According to researchers an idle computers hold the maximum possibility of finding the ripples in spacetime- gravitational waves.
In 2005, the Einstein@home project was launched to help analyze the massive amount of data collected by LIGO, which recorded the waves that the collision generated.
The Einstein@home is about to start analyzing data from recently-upgraded LIGO making use of the idle time computers of the volunteers who have downloaded a screen saver and will send the results back to the central server.
