Chennai: The election authorities in Tamil Nadu have so far seized Rs 7.40 crore in cash, in the run up to the May 16 Assembly polls and 73 cases related to alleged electoral offences were registered in the state.
Besides cash seizures, 151 rice bags, 4.5 kilos of ganja, 3,74,030 ml of Indian Made Foreign Liquor, 110 litres of arrack procured from neighbouring Puducherry were among the merchandise seized, an official release said here today.
Also, cases of violation of electoral rules have been registered against various political parties. Such cases include hoisting of party flags and putting up flex-banners without following rules.
Seizure of cash, goods and contraband were done across Tamil Nadu after the Model Code of Conduct came into force on March 4. Foreign currencies of seven countries, the value of which is not known were seized in Dharmapuri district.
Surveillance teams seized Rs 5.15 crore, recovered Rs 2.25 crore in cash, it said.
