Chennai: A former temporary employee of the Income Tax department was arrested here Thursday for allegedly attacking another worker with acid two days ago.
A special team arrested G Prabu (30) for attacking Mohit Pathak with acid, police said in a release.
Citing an enquiry, police said Prabu was employed in the I-T department on temporarily basis as a data entry operator a few months ago and was in love with a woman colleague.
However, he had later quit the job and joined work in an electrical shop.
The woman had 'ignored' Prabu and was in love with Pathak which infuriated him, police said.
Prabu subsequently attacked Pathak with acid with the help of a friend, police said, adding, a search was on to nab the absconding accomplice of the accused.
Prabu was produced in a court and later lodged in prison.
Pathak had been admitted to a private hospital here with 40 per cent burns suffered in the attack at his apartment in Central Revenue Quarters at Anna Nagar.
Pathak, a BSc graduate and hailing from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, is a hockey player.
He has been working in Income Tax office here for the past one year.
