Jayalalithaa convenes emergency meet at Chennai hospital, dictates speech on Cauvery row

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday chaired an emergency meeting at her room in Apollo hospital in Chennai on the ongoing Cauvery impasse where she gave directions to her ministers on how to handle the issue.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday chaired an emergency meeting at her room in Apollo hospital in Chennai on the ongoing Cauvery impasse where she gave directions to her ministers on how to handle the issue.

CM Jayalalithaa also nominated PWD minister and three officials to attend the chief ministers' meeting, likely to be held on coming Thursday over Cauvery water row between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 

A press release of Tamil Nadu government stated, "The Hon'ble Chief Minister Jayalalithaa convened a meeting between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm today in her room in the Apollo Hospital, Greams Road, Chennai, on the Interim directions issued by the Supreme Court on the Cauvery issue. 

The Hon'ble Chief Minister was apprised of the directions of the Supreme Court today on the Applications filed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with reference to the orders of the Supreme Court dated 5/6.9.2016, 12.9.2016 along with the application filed by Tamil Nadu on 26.9.2016 that Karnataka shall not be heard on any matter on Cauvery until and unless it complies with and makes good the shortfall in releases as directed by the Supreme Court.

In this meeting, the Chief Secretary to Government Dr P Rama Mohana Rao, IAS Advocate General Thiru K N Venkataramanan, IAS (Retd.) and Secretary-IV to Chief Minister Thiru A Ramalingam, IAS, partipated.

The Hon'ble Chief Minister was apprised of the directions of the Supreme Court directing Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for the next 3 days. The Hon'ble Chief Minister was apprised that the matter has been posted for further hearing at 2 pm on 30.9.2016. The Hon'ble Chief Minister was also apprised that the Supreme Court had directed the Attorney general to facilitate a meeting with Executive Heads of the States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with the Ministry of Water Resources to recommend ways to break the impasse in the issue. The Hon'ble Chief Minister was informed that the above meeting is likely to be scheduled on 29.9.2016 (Thursday). 

The Hon'ble Chief Minister directed the Minister for Public Works, highways and Minor Ports Department, Thiru Edapaddi K Palaniswami, the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, Dr P Rama Mohana Rao, IAS., and Chairman, Cauvery technical Cell, Thiru R Subramaniam to attend the meeting on behalf of the State of Tamil Nadu. 

The Hon'ble Chief Minister discussed in detail the issues to be taken up by Tamil Nadu at the meeting. The Hon'ble Chief Minister dictated the speech of the Hon'ble Chief Minister, which will be read out at the meeting by the Chief Secretary to Government."

Earlier today, in a setback to the Karnataka government, the Supreme Court directed the state to release at least 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for next three days. The apex court further asked the Attorney General to facilitate a meeting between executive heads of two states and the Centre to resolve the deadlock.​
