Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police has detained a woman constable for interrogation in connection with the brutal attack on senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Brijpal Teotia.
Police said that at least 100 rounds were fired from AK-47 rifles at the convoy of Teotia on Thursday in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) at around 7:20 pm. Five others were also injured in the gruesome attack.
Constable Sunita's husband, gangster Rakesh Hasanpuria, was killed in a police encounter in 2003. She had then held Teotia responsible for her husband's death.
According to reports, Sunita could be the mastermind behind the attack on the BJP leader, who once used to work as a constable with the Delhi Police.
Notably, Rakesh Hasanpuria's family had also opposed Teotia during his election campaign in 2012. Teotia contested the 2012 state Assembly Elections from Muradnagar seat but lost and was preparing for 2017 polls.
Meanwhile, Teotia is reportedly recuperating at Fortis hospital in Noida, where he was admitted for treatment.
Police have recovered the vehicle used in the attack along with automatic weapons from "close to the place of occurrence".
UP DGP Javeed Ahmad said police was investigating the crime from different angles.
