Kanpur: Seven body were on Friday fished out of Ganga, taking the toll in yesterday's incident during immersion of a Ganesha idol to nine.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shalabh Mathur said it was initially reported that 12 people were feared drowned. But later it was found that there were 11 people on the boat, including the boatman, who swam to safety.
Three passengers were rescued yesterday, of who two died at a hospital, while a woman was undergoing treatment, he said.
The rescue operation was underway. A case has been registered against the boatman, the SSP said.
The deceased were identified as Rajesh (40), Yash (13), Santosh (48), Ajay (22), Gudu (38), Harsh (12), Sanjay (35), Vinti (12) and Tanay (13).
The incident occurred at 6 pm yesterday when the boat carrying residents of Shivkatra colony in Lalbangla area capsized at Siddhnath Ghat in Jajmau.
