Jalpaiguri: Sometimes prey animals are too large to swallow but a few reptiles like the python still take the plunge and in the process they suffocate themselves to death.
A similar case was recently reported from West Bengal where a 20-foot long python had apparently tried to swallow a goat. However, the alert villagers and forest officials were able to rescue the snake in time.
The reptile was later on successfully released into the forest, NDTV reported.
The incident took place in Mallik Shobha village, some 40 km from Jalpaiguri district, on Thursday. The huge python was spotted when the villagers rushed to the spot where they had heard squealing of a goat on the edge of a forest.
The Burmese Rock Python can grow several feet longer during their life time. Reports of python killing prey animals like cows, lambs and sheep are common in the area.
