Kolkata flyover collapse: Here is what we know so far

At least 14 people were killed when a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Kolkata on Thursday.

Kolkata: A portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed on Thursday over taxis and other vehicles in the congested Posta area here.

Here are the key developments:

• At least 14 people were killed and 78 got injured in the incident. Many are still trapped under the wreckage of the metal-and-cement structure that came down in the northern part of the metropolis.
• Some people have been rescued from the spot and rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
• West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in Midnapore for election campaign, visited the Vivekananda Road flyover collapse spot near Ganesh Talkies. She has directed the authorities to speed up the relief and rescue operations.
• Police, fire brigade and disaster management personnel have rushed to the accident site and started rescue work. The accident spot is about 13 kms from the NDRF base. The Army has also joined rescue operations in flyover collapse in Kolkata.
• Cranes have been pressed to remove the debris. Locals are also helping in the rescue operation.
• Several passenger vehicles, including a bus, are trapped under the debris.
• The incident took place at around noon at the busy Rabindra Sarani-KK Tagore Street crossing near Burrabazar, the trading hub and one of the most congested areas in the city.
