New Delhi: Sarita Singh, who jumped from the balcony of her fourth floor flat in Noida after hearing that her husband and senior Delhi Police official Amit Singh had shot himself to death, died at a hospital in Noida on Wednesday.
Amit Singh, an Assistant Commissioner posted at Delhi Police's Special Cell, had allegedly shot himself dead in their apartment in Noida Sector 100 on Monday. Following this, Sarita had jumped off the balcony and was severely injured. She was admitted to Yatharth Hospital.
"She was brought in a critical condition and was admitted in the ICU. She passed away today at around 12.30 PM," said a senior doctor at the hospital.
The reason behind the couple taking the extreme steps has not been ascertained yet.
Investigators have briefed Delhi Police about the case and so far it has emerged that on Monday night, the couple was alone at home with their 18-month-old daughter when the incident took place.
Singh locked himself in a room and allegedly shot himself dead with his service revolver. Singh's wife raised an alarm and security guards rushed to his apartment. Minutes after neighbours gathered around, Singh's wife ran towards the balcony and allegedly jumped off, police sources said.
Investigators also found blood stains in the premises of the apartment, suggesting that Singh's wife was injured before she took the extreme step. Neighbours told the police that she tried to slit her wrist before jumping off the balcony.
It is also suspected that she tried to kill herself with Singh's gun first and when it failed, she resorted to the other option.
Singh, a DANIP official, was posted as an assistant commissioner in the Special Cell of Delhi Police.
