Beijing: A major accident was today evaded by emergency workers following damage to an underground gas pipeline during repairing near the iconic Tiananmen Square.

Emergency workers capped the gas leak at Tiananmen Square in Beijing's city centre, shortly after an underground pipeline was damaged during road work, authorities said.

Part of the underground gas pipeline was damaged this morning by people repairing the road in Dongrongxian Alley near Tiananmen Square, an official with the Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment said on condition of anonymity.

Emergency workers from Beijing Gas Group capped the leak at 10 am and no casualties were reported, he said.
