Ameer Mehtr, a Syrian refugee, braved massive waves to swim for seven hours to reach Greece from Turkey, according to a report published in Independent.

He did not have money to pay smugglers to transport him to Europe as his family lost their home due to civil war, the report adds.

A trained swimmer, Mehtr spent several months in training in Lebanese capital Beirut. He had been living in Beirut after fleeing Syria in May.

Interestingly, Mehtr had to run for over an hour to evade Turkish police officers deployed to catch people smugglers.
